Connecting to the Warwick Hotspot VPN

These instructions are based on using Debian 'sid' (unstable), GNOME and NetworkManager. It would not be unreasonable to expect that they would also work on a recent version of Ubuntu.

Most users will already have it, but ensure that you have NetworkManager installed:

Now install the required NetworkManager plugin for the Warwick VPN, being careful to ensure that it is _pptp_:

Ensure that NetworkManager is running:

The NetworkManager icon should now be in your system tray. Click on it and go to 'VPN Connections > Configure VPN...'

Once the empty list of VPNs appears, click on 'Add'. You should see the following dialog:

Click 'Forward' and you should be presented with:

Select 'pppd tunnel (PPTP, BTGPRS, Dial-up)' from the drop-down list (it is probably the only option you have) and click 'Forward'. You should see:

Give a name to this VPN connection (it doesn't matter what it is) and select 'Windows VPN (PPTP) from the 'Type' drop-down list. Insert 10.10.10.10 as the 'Gateway'.

Now go to the 'Authentication' tab and tick 'Refuse MS CHAP':

Now click 'Forward' and then 'Apply'. You should now have a named connection in the 'VPN Connections' window.

You can click 'Close' on that window, the configuration having been completed.

To actually connect to the VPN, first ensure that NetworkManager shows you as connected to 'hotspot'. It's also probably safest to log in via the web interface. Now click on the NetworkManager icon, and click on your named entry under 'VPN Connections'. A small lock icon with yellow pulses should appear on the NetworkManager interface, indicating that it is connecting to the VPN. Once the pulses have stopped and there is just the small lock remaining, you are connected to the VPN.
